Running with scissors
28 December 2003

late December can drag a man down
you feel it deep in your gut
short days and afternoons spent puttering around
in a dark house with the windows painted shut

I've been rereading my old Bloom County books, which I haven't looked at since I got them in the late eighties and was too young to understand most of the jokes. But good lord, that strip was prescient.

I've been in reader's purgatory the last couple weeks, unable to find something to which I can really commit myself and get into. (Hence the Bloom County books.) But in the mail the other day I received Augusten Burroughs' Running With Scissors from a good friend, so I should have no trouble anymore.

On Christmas, for the first time ever, my family didn't give each other any presents whatsoever. No sitting around the tree comparing gift tallies with my brother. No trash bags full of wrapping paper. No batteries. No gift receipts. No unwearable sweaters. And it felt great.
