State of the union
21 January 2004

I remember last year's State of the Union address like it was yesterday. I was in Grinnell, watching it with my family, booing with them throughout. Has it really been a whole year?

Yes, I guess it has. A very, very long year.

It's only in the last week or so that it's really felt like a new year to me. It's a new year which has already proven itself inestimably superior to the last one. I realized the other day that I spent the first seven or eight months of 2003 profoundly unhappy. It's alarming to come to that conclusion in retrospect, so long after the fact. But it's also refreshing to know that things are better, that I've left behind the toxic elements and retained the healthy ones, that I'm in a much different place than I was a year ago and I've made tangible progress. So don't worry about me. This year I will have a good job, I will live in a kickass city, and John Kerry will become president and make everything better again.

In other news, I think the cat's name is Vespa. Go, Vespa, go!
