Like gold
12 March 2004

My dance card was full last night.

I experienced, for the first time in my life, the magic of Whirlyball. This sport proves that poor judgement is still alive and well. Give adults access to alcohol and bumper cars and put them in a small arena where they wield miniature lacrosse sticks in a heated contest resembling the Aztec game tlachtli, except the loser isnt sacrificed at the end. I love the thought that some millionaire jackass thought this up and invested the capital to make it happen.

Then it was off to the Smart Bar below the Metro, to the after hours party DJed by Erlend Oye. I cant believe I almost didnt go. I didnt get there in time to see him hit on Katie, but she told me all about it. I wont steal her thunder by describing it here. Lets just say Erlend Oye seems to have supplanted Andrew WK as her hero. She was so excited I swear her head was going to explode.

Not long into the set, we were standing in front of the DJ booth watching hipsters dance awkwardly to The Argument by the Sea & Cake and I had to wonder if this was really happening. It was one of those Only in Chicago moments. Then, as if to drive the point home, Erlend got on the mic and said, in his endearingly almost-perfect English, You all like the Sea & Cake here? It wouldnt be a visit to Chicago without the Sea & Cake! At certain points he would sing along with the songs, which were sometimes his own, usually others. Ive never had a celebrity DJ before. Plus, Katie and I realized that, almost a year ago to the day, we saw Royksopp upstairs, and our only lament was that Erlend was not there. How cosmic! Two Norwegian, Erlend Oye-related events at the Metro, separated by a year.

My only real goals for the day are to accomplish a modicum of work and then go home and take a nap before meeting up with Dino, Leah, and Jill, who should be drunkenly blowing into town sometime this evening. Friendship is friendly.

Good things right now:

- Hearing "Prototype" on the radio in the cab from Whirlyball to the Metro
- Cheesy TGIF! emails from co-workers utilizing Flash animation
- Spending the weekend with Maggie, Leah, Dino, Jill, and hot lesbians
- Catching oneself bobbing one's head while listening to Speakerboxxx at one's workstation
- Sunday's South Side Saint Patrick's Day Parade (in theory)
- "We Got Panache" by Princess Superstar
- Friday afternoon naps
