Say it ain't so
23 July 2003

Tonight at practice I had a flashback to a night, almost exactly eight years ago, when Weezer's "Say It Ain't So" was a single. It was a sad summer in a lot of ways. I hadn't been getting along with my parents, I was about to go to college, and I was eighteen years old (enough said). Anyway, we had just gotten back to Grinnell after summer vacation, and I was over at a friend's house. Her basement TV room was classicwood paneling, beer signs, pool table. Tim Longman had just died and a lot of his friends were down there. We were watching MTV and that excellent video for "Say It Ain't So" came on. Everyone sang along with the lines "wrestle with Jimmy" and "so be cool." You spend a lot of time at this age looking back and trying to pinpoint possible moments when another bit of innocence was chipped away. This may have been one of them.
