Throwing time away
09 January 2004

There's a new commercial for Monster.com that features an old Pere Ubu song called "Wasted". This song has been a favorite of mine for several years. I find it ironic that it is being used to promote a job-seeking service, especially given the commercial's sieze-the-day, life-improvement message. Why? Well, here are the lyrics:

It's the kiss of the tears, stinging and cold
the sum of the years, the story untold
it's the dawn of the day, surely must come
married we stayed, look what's been done
in the heart of our hearts, the heart of the soul
at the heart of the hopes and the fears that we've known
we know, we'll know we were throwing time away
breathlessly throwing time away, throwing time away
recklessly throwing time away

On the other hand, the song goes a long way toward encapsulating the way I'm feeling about my own career prospects and life in general. Thanks, Monster.com!
