The game itself: action-packed. The marching band rendition of "I Like The Way You Move": dumb. Jessica Simpson "kicking things off" by screaming "I choose to party!": dumb. Kid Rock wearing an American flag poncho: dumb and potentially offensive. Janet Jackson doing "Rhtyhm Nation": awesome. Justin Timberlake ripping off part of Janet Jakson's costume to EXPOSE HER BARE BREAST ON NATIONAL TELEVISION: Surprisingly disturbing. It's reassuring to know that CBS refused to air commercials by MoveOn.org and PETA, and the NFL wouldn't let Bono perform at halftime because he wanted to mention the African AIDS crisis, but CBS approved this stunt. (Sorry folks; I didn't think I would ever link to the Drudge Report.) As more news emerges it appears that CBS' official line is that they had no idea the stunt would happen, and that this "wardrobe malfunction" even took JJ and JT by surprise. But it looked pretty intentional to me, and if she wasn't planning on the world seeing her breasts, why was she wearing a nipple tassel? And of course, the powers that be are paying their usual sanctimonious lip service to the stunt's impropriety while at the same time passing the buck. None of this would be a big deal if we were Europe. The SB party itself was awesome; we had more than enough food because we decided Aden was eating for six: he's pregnant with two women who are themselves pregnant, one of them with twins. We also managed to etymologize two new slang constructions: When you want to say "later" you can now say "Malc," and here's why: "Peace out" has for sometime now been vernacularly analogous to "Peace in the Middle East" which Aden shortened last night to "Peace in the Middle" which became "Malcom in the Middle" which became, simply, "Malc." Also, a stupid French person is a "pomme fritard." Yesterday I had an enjoyable trip downtown which resulted in my acquisition of new jeans, a hipster hat, and perhaps most importantly, the new Air album which is just, god. Amazing. First great album of 2004, easily. Malc! |
